Even ‘death do us part’ couldn’t halt her march down the aisle…
Cash-strapped Maui wedding planner Pali Moon can’t believe her luck when a prospective bride flashing a five-carat dazzler pops into her shop, “Let’s Get Maui’d,” to request a glitzy beachside wedding. But then Pali learns the lavish wedding must take place on Valentine’s Day—only nine days away. Oh, and one other little hitch—the groom’s been missing at sea for more than a week. But no worries, the bride assures Pali, with or without the groom the wedding will take place. She’s struck a deal with the groom’s best friend to be the proxy groom, if necessary. Two days before the nuptials, a male corpse floats ashore on a South Maui beach. Looks like the groom’s finally shown up. So now what’s it gonna be—a wedding…or a funeral?
Maui Widow Waltz Islands of Aloha Mystery Series Book 1 eBook JoAnn Bassett
Some of those who gave this book weak reviews seem disappointed that Maui Widow Waltz is not great literature. Well, duh! While some may call this a "cozy" mystery it is not that either. This book is a temporary and light escape from whatever is going on in the real world or maybe something a little different from the other books some of us might read that call for some thinking. Slightly predictable, a little bit scary, and sometimes silly this book can take you away from your cares and worries for a very short time.I like the Maui setting and the world's meanest woman--not bride who at first, is full of silly malapropisms. I like Pali the centerpiece character of the book who despite seeming to be smart is in great financial distress. The main focus of her life does not seem to be catching a man and she doesn't seem to have some terrible divorce story like most of these books which I find refreshing. She likes men, appreciates men, but she lives her life happy with her good friends and her eyes open.
This is a little bit of a murder mystery book with a couple of outrageous characters who need to be there to make life miserable for all the good people. I liked it and will probably, eventually, read more in this series while my mind is percolating on what really good (hopefully) book to read next.

Maui Widow Waltz Islands of Aloha Mystery Series Book 1 eBook JoAnn Bassett Reviews
When rich and spoiled mainland socialite, Lisa Marie Prescott, walked into Pali Moon’s ‘Let’s Get Maui’d’ wedding shop and asked Pali to plan a wedding, despite the fact that the groom-to-be had been missing at sea for over a week, Pali’s first inclination was to decline. But, with the unrelenting rain putting a damper on business, Pali’s having trouble paying her bills, and an unscrupulous real estate dealer has his eyes on her business. Principles are fine, but a person has to eat, so Pali takes the job.
Things get hinky when she learns that the bride’s father is a gangster who owns a lucrative trash business, and that trash is not the only thing he disposes of, and then the stand-in for the missing groom, his business partner, is found dead, washed up on the beach. Pali is a wedding planner, not a detective, but it looks like the cops aren’t making any headway in solving either case. Pali is left holding the bag, and a lot of unpaid bills. What’s a wedding planner to do? Why, solve the case and help put the bad guys—or gals—away.
Maui Widow Waltz by JoAnn Bassett is the first book in the Islands of Aloha mystery series. I’d previously read one of the later books in the series, and was thoroughly amused and entertained by it, so I opened this one with the expectation to be similarly engaged. I was not disappointed. Pali and her weird assortment of friends are just engaging in the premiere issue as in later issues, and as a bonus I got to learn more about our heroine. The author writes about Hawaii like someone who knows the islands well, and makes the people and place come alive.
A really good mystery is one that can be read in one sitting, because once you start, you can’t put it down until it’s finished. This one fits the bill.
I read book one in the Aloha Mystery Series, Maui Widow Waltz, on the cruise to the Hawaiian Islands that I just completed.
After finishing, I immediately began reading book two.
The good You can't beat Hawaii as a setting. Just sayin'. The hero is highly relatable (relate-able?)... unless you've got enough money to make ends meet, and then you could just get in her head and see what it feels like. And why is that?? Because - glory be! - JoAnn Bassett knows how to show you stuff, rather than take the easy way out by telling you. She also sticks to the point of view of her hero (which admittedly is pretty easy when using 1st person POV). And putting a special twist on the old trope of a vacuous, spoiled rich girl... magnifique!
The disappointing supporting cast could be more three-dimensional. They're more than cardboard, but barely. They're like character sketches you do while outlining your novel. The best friend, Farrah, is fleshed out the most of the supporting cast. (No, that's not true. Pali's car is the most fleshed out of her supporting cast - it plays a key role in both books 1 and 2.) I am hoping that each subsequent book will feature another supporting cast member to give them all depth. The villainous Tank, however, is just a piece of tissue paper.
Buy it. I don't think you'll be disappointed in this one (unless you're going through a phase where you won't read 1st person books, like I went through a few years back). I was so impressed I jumped right into book 2!
I've enjoyed other books by Ms. Bassett so I took a chance on this one. For those who, like I, enjoy mysteries, this is a winner. There are no steamy sex scenes, the characters are well developed, and the twist at the end works well. The main character is a wedding planner, down on her financial luck. When a client comes in who wants a wedding planned in just a week, to be held on Valentine's Day, Pali Moon, wedding planner extraordinaire has no idea what she's about to get into. The groom, a Silicon Valley genius has been missing for some time, presumed to have gone overboard of his rental boat somewhere on the coast of Maui. The bride, Lisa Marie Prescott is more than a bit ditzy but believes the groom will show up for the wedding, and has convinced his business partner to stand in. Saying anything else about the plot would be a "spoiler." However, I highly recommend this. It isn't by any stretch a heavy weight mystery, but I doubt the author intended it to be. It is solid, and a fun read.
