Lady Bryn edition by Julie L York Romance eBooks
I was disappointed in this short story. Throughout, the author has an overarching moral/objective that she pushes to the point that the characters become tools of the objective as opposed to allowing the characters to blossom and therefore having the moral of the story unfold through the drama of the characters. I rarely see books that push a theme as "in your face" as this book, and for me, it ruined the story. Quite likeable characters became robotic in their actions, enslaved to the over-potent push of the author's agenda. There was also a section towards the end of the story where I got completely left behind: it wasn't until nearly the end of the chapter when I realized that the heroine was on another continent entirely from the setting of the rest of the book. How did that happen and why did it take me almost the entire chapter to realize she was in another country?? For me, though I finished reading the short story, that flaw is what kicked me completely out of the story and the lives of the characters. This book had a lot of potential and the storyline was excellent but for these two flaws that overshadowed it - especially the author's voice, which was louder than the characters' story - I couldn't lose myself in the beauty of the tale, which is what a good story does to me. I downloaded this short for free, which was nice, but it was only a mediocre read and one that I would not recommend to others to try.

Lady Bryn edition by Julie L York Romance eBooks Reviews
I could barely get through this book. It had a ridiculous plot involving a married couple who didn't like each other, were rude, and were, frankly, not believable as they met at a masquerade and didn't even recognize each other after conversation. I also had a hard time with the period the story was set--I thought it was regency, but it is hard to tell as it did not seem to be well researched.
The writing technique is good, but I just can't stop thinking about how mad I am that the "hero" hits his wife and is excused for having done it because he was stressed about a financial problem and she pushed him over the edge. There is never an excuse for hitting. I also find it hard to believe that after 10 years of marriage and distance that they just magically connect after a masked meeting. And he "forbade" her from attending the party? I'm sorry.. this story just made me angry. I guess the fact that I kept thinking of this story says something about it
I'm confused....I don't know what the one star reviewer is talking about I think that they must have gotten their books mixed up.
I would have gladly paid $5 for this and felt I got my moneys worth so to download it for free was like winning a small lottery.
I enjoyed the story itself I cried through Bryn's pain she was so unloved and lonely. I adored her strong nature and undefeated character.
The one thing that haunts me is that she couldn't recognize the masked man at the ball. Sure it was a bit predictable but entertaining anyway. I'll be on the lookout for more of Julie L. York books. Happy Reading and enjoy.
A book that has you routing for the characters throughout....
I loved the subtle twists within this book, I will admit I did guess that the mysterious man and woman meeting at the party were who I thought they were and found it strange with all the attention written/paid to the woman's eyes that she wasn't recognised easier. However after meeting my ex for a cuppa the other week I asked him my eye colour and after much too long (both the going out and his awkward pause) he couldn't answer, so I suppose even that point is believable!
I think anyone who enjoys historical romance, or romance in general would enjoy this story that makes you believe in second chances...
I must confess that I read this only because the reviews were either really good, or really bad. I came away from this not really caring about either character. Neither made any effort to get their relationship to work for a decade, they seemed to take the path of least resistance, and focus on anything but each other. The one thing that seemed to be a glaring oversight-he didn't know the color of her eyes, but she didn't know the color of his eyes. However, nothing is mentioned about that. There were other, small inconsistencies, like his rages, and his sons' acceptance of him without a murmur. Do all "strong" women cry as much as she did? The timeline jumped all over the place, so the story did not seem to flow naturally. Overall, it was a completely forgettable, yet thankfully, short, read.
Bryn an American has been in a 10year loveless marriage which did produce 2 sons. Her husband seldom comes home and is an argument every time He does not like that she wears pants to run the estate. He hit her by accident on one visit .Her children try to attack the man they did not even know he was their father .He came home so rarely they did not know him. Bryn is tires of never going anywhere she know a masquerade is coming up.Her husband forbid her to go.She goes anyway and meets a wonderful man.He is entranced by her as well follows her outside and sees her leave. He had planned on asking her to be his mistress plans change after he sees her.Is this going to be the end of their marriage or a new beginning. This is a short Victorian novella I wish she would write something else in that style. .
Though the time of being in an estranged marriage seemed a little lengthy in the story, the plot was still well-written. Bryn is a strong American woman who marries a cold English gentleman who is tortured by his family's past. He ignores her and they live separately; she is raising their two sons, he is building a business. By his order, she is not to attend parties, etc. etc. Little does realize she is strong willed and has a brain...and is not afraid to use it.
The plot thickens when he meets a mysterious green eyed goddess at a masquerade party....
Sometimes a man just needs to open his eyes to realize he has everything he needs right home!
