Awakening Through Love Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness John Makransky Philip Osgood Lama Surya Das Books
Makransky, a former Peace Corps volunteer, learned in his service in the Philippines that all the resources and strategies are to no avail if there is not love - that is, the will for others to have well-being. Makransky, now a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, reveals in this book a practice that allows us to access our essential love. The first step is to notice that we have been (and are being) loved throughout our lives (otherwise we wouldn't have survived). The next step is to open ourselves to receive that love. That is basically the program. He leads the reader through practices of noticing and receiving love. Loving isn't a matter of our needing to make an effort to love. If we become aware of it and open ourselves to receive it, love flows through us. Actually, love surrounds us; we live in it. When we wake up and don't resist love, we participate in the love flow. It isn't necessary to be flawless to give love; after all, none of us is without flaw. Those we look down upon also have their moments of integrity and kindness. Our smug cynicism has focused our attention on the unloving aspects of our lives and of the world. Makransky assures us that it is possible to learn to recognize the deeper reality, and he shows us that there is nothing more important for us to do. We used this book in our weekly circle meetings to learn this important practice.Tags : Amazon.com: Awakening Through Love: Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness (9780861715374): John Makransky, Philip Osgood, Lama Surya Das: Books,John Makransky, Philip Osgood, Lama Surya Das,Awakening Through Love: Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness,Wisdom Publications,0861715373,Buddhism - General,Buddhism - Doctrines,Compassion - Religious aspects - Buddhism,Compassion;Religious aspects;Buddhism.,Love - Religious aspects - Buddhism,Love;Religious aspects;Buddhism.,Spiritual life - Buddhism,Spiritual life;Buddhism.,Body, Mind & Spirit Mindfulness & Meditation,Buddhism,Buddhist Philosophy,Compassion,Love,Non-Western philosophy,RELIGION Buddhism General (see also PHILOSOPHY Buddhist),Religion,Religion - World Religions,Religion Buddhism Rituals & Practice,Religious aspects,Self-Help Meditations,Self-Help Spiritual,Spiritual life
Awakening Through Love Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness John Makransky Philip Osgood Lama Surya Das Books Reviews
The orientation to first receiving love from many sources was very helpful. The writing is accessible, not overy abstract or obtuse.
This book is a must for anybody who has difficulty with negative self talk or harsh self criticism. Makransky does a beautiful job in guiding the reader through a process of slowly increasing complexity of meditative practice.
A remarkable book with great practices. I bought it because Pena Chodron recommened it in one of her audio books. John Makranksy clearly explains how to connect with your koving kindness.
Eloquent and inspiring. Great introduction to Tibetan Buddhist (particularly Dzogchen) meditation and basic teaching for anybody, whether or not you have a formal teacher or affiliation with a dharma center. Makransky is an authorized lama in a Dzogchen lineage and an academic scholar, a born-and-bred westerner who has studied with many of the best Tibetan teachers for decades. He has an unsurpassed feel for shaping Buddhism for the western mind and cultural context, while staying utterly true to the authentic teachings and practices in down-to-earth way. If you want to do this on your own, at least to start, there really is no better source. It's also great to supplement formal teachings if you do have an affiliation.
This book has very practical ways on how to really get in touch with our love, first in ourselves, then in others. He offers very powerful meditations that bring you directly to to the awareness of great joy and compassion. I have meditated for years, and when I did a meditation offered by John I got in touch with my purpose and my motivation. My meditation and my life have been touched in a meaningful way from John's words. I am greatly indebted to him for helping me really understand that "All you need is Love"
As a devout Christian who dives deep into daily contemplative prayer, I found this book invaluable. Makransky writes about Buddhist thought with such clarity and lyricism that the words seem to sing off the page. I was particularly struck by the way he unpacks then notion of karma in an unusually granular and logical way. As his emphasis is on impartial love and he quotes Jesus throughout the book, I found much of what Makransky illuminates to be relevant for a contemplative Christian and have used it to reinvigorate my own prayer practice. All in all, one of the best spiritual "self help" books I have ever encountered.
Beautifully written book with meditations that speak to Western sensibilities through an authentic Buddhist lens. This is the best portrayal of metta for oneself that I have ever seen. He talks about love as a wish of well-being and happiness for self and others but allows this to blossom by instructing us to channel others' (benefactors) wishes for us as the first step, asking that we bathe in these feelings "as a puppy in the sun." Makransky wisely tells us that we need to do this meditation consistently over a long period of time before we can then let such feelings flow naturally to others. He knows our Western tendencies toward self-criticism and this first step is so very important. What a gift this book is!
