Although I read much suspense and edgy material, it is sometimes refreshing to find a story that immerses you in pure wholesome fun. The Spinner and the Slipper is a beautiful tale of sacrifice and heroism. Cameron Lockhart writes in a simple but lush style, and the characters are vivid. I love quiet heroines; the kinds who do not resort to belittling or brow-beating but who fight in more gentle ways. Eliana, the miller's daughter, is one such heroine. Soft-spoken but strong, she is truly endearing. I also loved the nameless Faerie Captain, a character of integrity and strength. When Eliana's mother is dying, she gives her daughter two priceless gifts, a necklace and a ring. But it is the promise made to Eliana's mother by a kind Faerie that is the greatest gift of all. Eliana's father remarries after a time, and a thoughtless boast from her stepmother propels the miller's daughter on an unforgettable journey. Imprisoned by a greedy king, Eliana is given an impossible task. A mysterious stranger gives her aid. But Eliana's savior incurrs the wrath of Oberon, his Faerie king. Now imbroilled in the court intrigues of mortal and faerie kingdoms alike, Eliana and her nameless helper must face many obstacles. Will they succeed?
Ms. Lockhart skillfully weaves threads from three classic fairy tales into a seamless and original plot. There is no feeling of force, and the stories meld together perfectly. I have never been a fan of Rumpelstiltskin, but this author breathes life and dimension into an intriguing version of this character. I also loved the clever albeit brief references to Jack and the Beanstalk and A Midsummer Night's Dream as well. Perhaps my favorite aspects of this tale are the element of sacrifice on the part of both main characters and the motif of the glass slippers. Both main characters gives something precious to the other, and the glass slippers are made from a very special substance. I also love how the stepmother's thoughtless boast is handled as it illustrates how quickly rumors spread and are distorted. This plot point made me laugh and think at the same time.
Please give this lighthearted, wholesome romance a chance. There are delightful instances of fantasy in the tale that made me smile. You will not be disappointed. God bless you all.

Sweet and mysterious, The Spinner and the Slipper is a wonderful debut by Camryn Lockhart. The story is somewhat of a cinderella story merged with rumpelstiltskin and it actually works! Eliana is placed in a dire situation when her nasty stepmother lies and claims Eliana can spin straw into gold. The local king decides to put that rumor to the test much to Elaina's dismay. How can a poor miller's daughter fill a room with gold, especially when her life is on the line? But all is not lost, Elaina has a secret protector, one from the fairy realm and in the end, she will discover her true worth.
I really enjoyed this fairy tale retelling. It's a Rumplestilskin meets Cinderella with a little Midsummer's Nights Dream thrown in. It's a glorious mix that's woven together remarkably well. I loved all the characters, especially the "Green-eyed man" aka the Rumplestilskin character. I loved seeing how the different elements of each fairy tale were included. The story itself drew me in immediately and kept me flipping pages to see how it would all work out.
If you love any of the above fairy tales or just enjoy a good retelling, then you should definitely give this book a read!
I really enjoyed reading a new twist on old fairy tales. I like it when authors dream up new ways to tell well-known stories.
The unnamed Fey takes on a role of protector. It's a very Edward-from-Twilight role at first, because he just watches from the wings and bears his promise to Cinderella's mother with levity and sympathy, rather than romantic interest. But duty turns to interest over the years and I believe it was portrayed very well. Not stalkerish, but merely... how love happens.
I really enjoy the idea that a Rumpelstiltskin-type character could be a hero rather than a villain. It's much more interesting and makes the story more complex. Will she choose him or the prince?
The only real distraction with the Fey world--Oberon, Puck, Titania. They really only served as a weak obstacle and in the end were fairy inconsequential. The unnamed Fey could've just been an unnamed fairy that hadn't been claimed, giving less power to his lore and more power to the story spun around him and Cinderella. I am always interested to see more character development in novels.
Overall it was an enjoyable read.
