Referring to an odd couple, or to silence fears of never finding one’s soulmate, countless mothers around the world, would comfort with, “There’s a lid for every pot.” The title poem speaks to finding that soulmate. (p. 57) "Over time, however, I’ve come to believe that the ‘lid’ may also refers to finding one’s calling...one’s hat, so to speak." For almost her entire life, Halo thought of herself as a painter. This collection of Thea Halo's poetry is a welcomed addition to her acclaimed Memoir, Not Even My Name.

I read these poems in one gulp, amazed by Halo's ability to turn ordinary life into poetic art.

Even though, as she says in her Preface, she transitioned from painting to writing, the artist at work is obvious in many of the poems, most notably, I think, in "Come in Spring" (p. 49). We are left with the impression of having traveled with the poet across a large canvas of multiple colors and textures.

I was especially impressed by the vividness and orginality of her similes (they reminded me of Homer's) and metaphors, such as the following:

"like icicles the Soldiers will fall" (p. 97);

"like a monk's incantation enchating a shrine" (p. 57);

"when the moon haunts the snowdrifts" (p. 44);

"where schools of sunfish ride the tide" (p. 79); and

"my eyelids unclock the world" (p. 81).

The imagery is truly exquisite in so many places, but equally noteworthy is the lack of excess and her ability to convey emotion through imagery and suggestion.

I like her tendency toward creating dialogic situations within individual poems (as in "A Dubious Comfort") or making references to other poets (and words from other poems) and thus placing the poems within other poetic traditions and contexts and inviting the reader to see relationships beyond the words on the page.

I found "Night" especially poignant and her sonnet (on p. 79) and haiku on p. 63 ("Doors close behind me") impeccably well-done--in both cases the form a perfect measure for the content.

Keep on writing, Thea!

Why can't I write like this? the reader will complain upon reading this seemingly effortlessly written and ethereal collection of poetry. It might help if, like Thea Halo, you could perceive the little creatures who share with us our Earth...and who are incomprehensible in their simplicity...it could help if you could disentangle the complexity of the universe in the cell...the atom...the slightness of movement. All the poems are truly amazing...wow.
love it, but I cannot waste my valuable time to write a comment. love it, but I cannot waste my valuable time to write a comment.
Breathes meaning into anyone of any age! Great read in one go. Great insight into the author of Not Even My Name.
The Poetry Book "A lid for every pot" is inspiring, simple and sophisticated at the same time.
I read it and plan to read it again and again. Some poems I read several times by now, they are my favorites but as I randomly open a page, another one becomes my favorite.
I love this book and recommended it to friends and family.
Thank you Thea Halo for another great Book !!!!!
